My story

It started in silence.

I didn’t come to fitness through sport or vanity. I came to it through silence. I grew up with a stutter, and for years speaking — in class, in any social situation — was the hardest thing I did. Training was where that pressure fell away. Moving, pushing, learning what my body could do: that was where I first found my voice.

As a kid I threw myself into jiu-jitsu and martial arts, into music, into sport. I didn’t know it then, but I was learning the things I still coach today — how breathing really works, and how a single athlete, alone with the task in front of them, manages their own mind.

The quiet years taught me something else. When you don’t speak, you watch. I learned to read body language, to notice how people carry themselves, to understand behaviour from the outside in. Seeing how someone moves, spotting where the dysfunction really sits, working a problem back to its cause — that turned out to be the largest part of coaching well, and for me it was already second nature.

So when I moved into personal training, it came naturally. I’d spent my early life mastering my own training and, just as seriously, my own growth — I’ve always been a relentless reader on the psychology of how people change. I’m a lifelong vegetarian too, who built his own physique without ever eating meat. All of it, I bring to my clients now: not just the programme, but the person running it.

My influences

I went and learned from the best.

I never wanted to coach from one narrow playbook, so I sought out the people who’d gone furthest. I studied the programs of the late Charles Poliquin — one of the most influential strength coaches the world has produced — and learned under a series of mentors after him.

Each of them sharpened the same instinct in me: to coach the bigger picture, never just the small problem in front of you. Over 25 years that’s grown into deep expertise in the areas most coaches never touch — metabolic and hormonal health, diabetes, blood pressure — because the people who find me usually need more than a standard plan.

What sets me apart isn’t a certificate on a wall. It’s 25 years of doing this, every single day, and refusing to settle for the results most coaches accept.

Started training — a passion that would define the next 25 years of my life.

Began coaching clients professionally, turning my obsession with training into a career.
2015
